NEED AN ENERGY EFFICENT WATER HEATER: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Energy Efficient Water Heater

Don’t think you need an energy efficient water heater? Did you know that 17% of the total energy in your home goes toward JUST your water heater? And that the average person uses about 80-100 gallons of water a day? If you do the math out, that’s a lot of energy spent on just your hot water, and we’re not even getting into what happens with older home systems. Here’s a crash course in what you need to know about keeping energy costs low when it comes to your water heating endeavors.

Things To Look For In Energy Efficient Water Heaters

There are three things to consider when shopping around for an energy efficient water heater.

  • Fuel source
  • Tank Capacity
  • Size

The fuel source is kind of a no brainer if we’re talking about  You’d have to be living under a rock to not be aware of the focus on clean energy in recent years. Water heaters, like cars, have been breaking into the sustainable energy game. Solar power water heaters are admittedly a small percentage of the current market, but are experiencing a massive growth in popularity amongst ecologically-focused homeowners. They use a series of solar panels to charge and power the heater.

Again, tank capacity and size make a lot of sense if you start to think about it. More water to heat means more energy expended. Bigger tank = bigger energy bill. Tankless water heaters are a great for this, as they allow homeowners to have more control over just how much water they’re using.

Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) Ratings

A water heater’s energy efficiency is rated by the uniform energy factor. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the product. The number is calculated based on how much water the heater uses and how much energy is used to power the heater itself. Think of it like an exchange rate: a high UEF rating means a higher return on every dollar of energy you put into it.
